PMFBY, abbreviated for Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, is a crop insurance scheme, which protects the farmers from the failure of their crops due to discernible perils, such as natural calamities, pests and diseases. The scheme accommodates the lowest and affordable uniform insurance premium for the farmers of the country.
Latest Update: Assam Government under Agriculture department announced on 15th July to Register 5 lakh Farmers under PM Fasal Bima Yojana by July 31 for Sali paddy. Atul Bora, Agriculture Minister of Assam said that district Agricultural Officers will undertake the project.
On 18th Feb 2016, PM Shri Narendra Modi launched the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana in the gracious presence of many dignitaries of India. Revamped Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana
Union Cabinet has authorized the revamping of the PM Fasal Bima Yojana to overcome the issues and problems faced during the implementation of the existing scheme. Some of the major modifications in the scheme are listed below:-
- The scheme is now completely voluntary for all the farmers.
- Out of the total premium amount assembled, 0.5% will be utilized on ICE- Information, Communication, and Education activities.
- The central share has been raised to 90% for the north-eastern states.
- If the state fails to sanction the premium amount to the authorized insurance companies before the stipulated time, the state cannot participate in the scheme for upcoming seasons anymore.
- It is now the state’s choice to determine their measure of finance for the risk covers.

- Basic Cover
Under the basic cover of PMFBY, the loss of standing crop (sowing to harvesting) due to unavoidable circumstances, for example, floods, droughts, natural fires, pest attack, crop diseases, etc. are covered. The claim is granted on the basis of the area affected.
- Add-On Coverage
The State Government may or may not choose to provide additional coverage based on the requirement of the crop to cover the following steps of crop and dangers leading to the crop loss- Prevented Sowing/Planting Risk: Due to drastic climatic conditions, the insured area is restricted from sowing.
- Mid-Season Adversity: If any seasonal climatic changes occur during the crop season, this particular cover provides relief funds immediately.
- Post-Harvest Losses: The cover facilitates an instant insurance claim in case of any calamity within the two weeks of harvesting.
- Localized Calamities: Crop loss due to localized calamities, such as hailstorm, heavy rainfall, cyclones, lightning, etc.
- Crop loss due to attack by wild animals
Exclusions
For crops damaged and affected due to nuclear risks, war and malicious will not be considered for allocating insurance claims under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.

How do I claim PMFBY Insurance Amount?

(i) Firstly, the insured farmers must contact the insurance company, bank or the state government to inform and report about the crop loss within 72 hours of damage.
(ii) Your report will be forwarded to the concerned insurance company.
(iii) A Damage Surveyor will be selected for the purpose by the insurance company within 72 hours of the report.
(iv) The designated Damage Surveyor will inspect the agricultural site within the next ten days.
(v) If found genuine, the amount will be transferred to the beneficiaries’ account within 15 days of the survey.
