Ayushman Bharat Scheme is a health insurance scheme, covering most of the states and UTs in India. An initiative by PM Modi, the scheme offers free healthcare services to eligible citizens of over 50 crores. For UT Jammu and Kashmir, the Prime Minister extends the benefits of the scheme, specifically to the residents of UT via the launch of yet another scheme called the J&K SEHAT Health Insurance Scheme.

J&K SEHAT Health Insurance Scheme
On 26th December 2020, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Sh. Narendra Modi announced the SEHAT Health Insurance Scheme. The entire event was conducted in the glorious presence of Home Minister, Amit Shah and J&K Lt. Governor, Manoj Sinha via video conferencing.
J&K SEHAT Health Insurance Scheme offers Rs. 5 lacs medical cover per family to all the residents of the UT regardless of their socio-economic statuses. Abbreviated for Social Endeavor for Health And Telemedicine, SEHAT is an expansion of the already existing AB-PMJAY, Ayushaman Bharat- Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.

The SECC 2011 proposes the registration of only 6 lacs families of the entire population of the UT Jammu and Kashmir. Hence, the rest of the 21 lacs families were not eligible for the benefits of the AB-PMJAY Scheme. With the launch of the SEHAT Health Insurance Scheme, all the UT families will be covered for the healthcare services at zero cost.
The government aims to ensure Universal Health Coverage. Apart from this, one of the significant features of the scheme is that the SEHAT Golden cardholders can avail themselves of the benefits and access free healthcare treatments in any PMJAY registered hospital across the country.

Providing better and quality health services to the J&K public, PM Modi announced the SEHAT Health Scheme. Some of the key objectives and benefits of the scheme are as follows:

Implementation of J&K SEHAT Health Insurance Scheme
The central government will monitor the implementation process of the Jammu Kashmir SEHAT Health Scheme. As of now, only the SECC 2011 registered residents are considered eligible for the scheme. Soon, the govt will make provisions for the enrollmeent of the rest of the J&K population under the scheme.
Once registered, the applicants will be able to easily access the various medical facilities and procedures, such as cardiology, nephrology, oncology and others. Also, the beneficiaries can procure the medicines through the SEHAT Golden Card.
In Jammu and Kashmir, around 219 hospitals, including 34 private ones are registered to provide th cashless medical services to the cardholders under the SEHAT scheme. Furthermore, the govt has enlisted about 24,418 hospitals for the same all over India. The cardholders can avail of the scheme services in any of the empanelled SEHAT scheme hospitals.
The Financial Commissioner of Health and Medical Education, Atal Dulloo extended the scheme benefits to the govt employees and retirees.

How to apply for SEHAT Health Insurance Scheme?
Currently, the government runs only offline application procedure to register for SEHAT Health Insurance Scheme. The approved beneficiaries are given a SEHAT Golden Card to avail the benefits of the scheme across the country. Follow the procedure described below in order to apply for the scheme and get your respective SEHAT Golden Card.
- Interested residents of J&K need to visit any nearest AB-PMJAY empanelled hospital or CSC Kendra.
- Obtain the SEHAT application form from the authorities.
- Write down your details in the form carefully.
- With the application form, attach the required list of documents.
- Submit the duly-filled SEHAT application form to the concerned department at the hospital or CSC Kendra.
- The concerned officials will verify the documents and the details thereafter.
- Upon successful verification and validation, you will be issued your SEHAT Golden Card.
Apply Online for SEHAT Health Insurance Scheme
Although, an online process has not been yet developed for the application of the Jammu Kashmir SEHAT Scheme, still we have provided an expected process for the same. The authorities are also planning to establish an online portal for the scheme to ease the registration and other processes.
Step I:- Visit the official website of PMJAY. Click on the tab “Am I eligible?” on the top right of the homepage.
Step II:- Enter the relevant details to check your eligibility. If eligible, an application form will appear on the screen.
Step III:- Feed in all the necessary details in the corresponding fields. Also, upload the scanned images of the documents needed, such as J&K Ration Card, Aadhaar Card, DOB proof etc.
Step IV:- At last, click on the “Submit” button to proceed. Note down the allotted application number for future use.

SEHAT Golden Cards
SEHAT Golden Cards are sanctioned after the approval of your application. It serves a proof that you are registered under the scheme and are eligible to avail of its benefits. The card includes a unique registration number that will be your SEHAT Registration ID. It is obligatory for the beneficiaries to produce their AB-PMJAY SEHAT Golden Card at the time of treatment at Ayushmaan Bharat empanelled hospitals, failure to which will not let you claim the insurance amount.
Over 23 lacs SEHAT Golden Cards have been disbursed among the Jammu Kashmir residents. Also, more than 30 lacs of the residents have registered themselves for the scheme.
