Chaa Sundari Scheme West Bengal
Under the Chaa Sundari Scheme, the Chief Minister of the State, Ms. Mamata Banerjee is about to provide Houses to the Tea Garden labourers. The scheme proposes to cover the area of North Bengal constructing houses for more than 750 labour families. Chaa Sundari scheme will cover the workers who are currently working in the 370 gardens under the tea estate.
The scheme also promises a subsidy based food ration to all these labour families. Also, as all these workers work under minimum wages, the government is calling for the re-examination of the pay of these labourers. Thus, the scheme is designed in such a way as to extend maximum benefits to the women and the Scheduled tribe communities of these areas.
The scheme was initially presented by the minister of the Department of Labour, West Bengal, Mr Moloy Ghatak on September 17, 2020. After that, the Finance minister of West Bengal, Mr Amit Mitra announced the scheme in the state budget of 2020-21. Considering the economic condition of these areas, the scheme has been allocated a fund of Rs. 500 Crore.

The Government of the state is already providing some of the benefits like Rs. 2/ kg rice, health-related benefits, free electricity and mid-day meals for school kids of these tea garden labours. Apart from this, with this new scheme, the government is promising a wide range of benefits ranging from food, house to wages. All of these benefits are listed below.
- Wage Increment/ re-examination- The scheme of Chaa Sundari promises the enhancement in the tea garden labour wages from Rs. 67 to Rs. 176.
- Ration Card Subsidy- The state government is also extending the scheme to provide subsidised food grains to the people belonging to these areas.
- Pucca Houses- As the prime component of the scheme, in the upcoming years, the government will provide sufficient funds to build the houses for the tea garden labours.
Scheme Eligibility Criteria
The schemes possess some of the criteria which are essential for any applicant to fulfil to get the benefits of the Chaa Sundari Scheme. The Eligibility criteria are:
- The benefits will be extended to the workers who belong to the state of West Bengal.
- Family willing to avail the benefits under the scheme must be below poverty line (BPL) category.
